MV Switchgear

Designed to Connect and Protect an Evolving Grid

ABB’s medium voltage switchgear (1 kV to 52 kV according to the IEC standards) are designed to connect and protect an evolving grid. Our medium voltage switchgear largely serves utilities, industry and infrastructure often providing the required medium-voltage link between high-voltage transmission systems and low-voltage users. Medium voltage electrical power distribution from generating stations to industries and consumers is divided into two main parts: primary and secondary distribution. ABB’s medium voltage switchgear offering comprises air - insulated and gas - insulated medium voltage switchgear for primary and secondary electrical power distribution.

Engineered to Outrun.

Primary Distribution

Connecting and protecting high transmission networks to medium voltage distribution.

Primary distribution distributes electrical energy from high-transmission lines to medium voltage networks. Medium voltage levels can then directly feed electricity to industries (ie. railways, steel, mining, chemicals, etc.) or to a secondary distribution network for end user consumption. Primary distribution substations are usually placed in areas where space is not constrained. Discover ABB’s medium voltage switchgear portfolio for primary distribution:

  • Air-insulated | UniGear Portfolio
  • Air-insulated | LeanGearZS9
  • Gas-insulated | ZX Portfolio

Secondary Distribution

Connecting and protecting medium voltage transmission lines to end-user.

Secondary distribution connects the primary distribution network operating in medium voltage with end users operating in low voltage. Secondary distribution substations are usually placed within urban areas, where space is limited. Discover ABB’s medium voltage switchgear portfolio for secondary distribution:

  • Air-insulated | UniSec
  • Gas-insulated | SafeRing / SafePlus Portfolio
